Back in January, when our community was on fire and the direction of the country took a turn, Celia searched on the guitar for some comforting sounds. After a while, the chords became familiar, and she began singing the mantra-like lyrics of a song nearlly half a century old. We performed our arrangement of this song at a show at the end of January, and people in the audience were spellbound. “You HAVE to record that,” some said to us.

So we did.

This is a long-running songwriter series, curated by our friend Brad Colerick. On this night, the evening is being hosted by guest host David Plenn. Joining us on the bill is Paul Givant — a musician with strong roots in the Los Angeles area. He is the leader of the band Rose's Pawn Shop, known for its blend of folk, Americana, rock, and roots punk. Rose's Pawn Shop has released multiple studio albums and toured extensively. Givant will be promoting a soon-to-be-released solo project. His songwriting is lyrically sharp, witty, and intelligent and explores more personal themes that his RPS work. He has appeared previously at Wine & Song with his duo The Contraptionists with Stephen Andrews.

Dear friends,

First of all, we're OK and safe, and we hope you are too. 

And we're not exactly OK either. 

It's impossible not to share the grief of so many we have worked, created, celebrated and just hung out with in places that have ceased to exist in a heartbeat. We feel lucky to still have Our Apartment, and it will be our privilege to support our friends and neighbors with whatever we are called on to provide in the days to come here in Los Angeles. We will get through this together. 

Our friend Rick Shea had asked us a while back to join him at his residency this Wednesday the 15th at Maui Sugar Mill Saloon in Tarzana, CA. While it feels strange and frivolous to ask people to come to a gig right now, we know the release and relief we finally felt hearing our friends read poetry on Sunday, even through their tears. If we can provide some grounding in the familiar, some connection and community, some harmony and hope with a set of acoustic songs, then please stop by to be with us, and so we can be with you.

WE ARE THE WEST

As vast and indefinable as the West itself, the intrepid sound stylists of We Are The West reach beyond the setting sun to create an eclectic symphonic landscape. Brett Hool (voice/guitar) and John Kibler (bass/voice) formed We Are The West in a shipping container on a sheep farm in Holland, and began performing as a duo in an abandoned convent in Brooklyn, before heeding the call to continue West to Los Angeles. Originally described as “a two-man orchestra of stunning vocals, meditative guitar, and exploratory double bass”, the duo paints with a broad palette of sound incorporating drums and percussion, woodwinds, strings, brass, pump organ, accordion, and unique vocal harmonies to create their dynamic and transporting songs.

Simon Petty and Celia Chavez met onstage in Los Angeles at a David Bowie tribute gig in 2013, and have combined their talents in life and song ever since. They play guitars and percussion to create intimate soundscapes for Simon’s smoky baritone and Celia’s honeyed alto voice. As Petty Chavez, they weave a world of dreamlike harmony to tell their modern day love story in a timeless fashion.
